Today, the first place most people go to find a product or service they need is a search engine like Google. In this modern age, many of businesses potential customers are using their smartphones or tablets to do it. Over 70% of consumers access websites on their smartphones and tablets. The days when having only one website that is optimized for desktop are finished and will no longer cut it for a businesses. My suggestion for any business is that they have a mobile responsive website with at least three different layouts based on screen resolution. With new mobile and tablet products hitting the market every day with different pixel dimensions it can be overwhelming so I recommend sticking to these three dimensions:
- Phone specific layout: 480px and below
- Tablet specific layout: 800 – 480px
- Desktop specific layout 800px and above
With the new Google algorithm set to hit April 21st the pressure is on businesses who do not already have a mobile friendly website because search rankings will be based partly on how mobile friendly a website is. From a Google rankings stand point responsive websites are the best solution to this problem. This is because responsive site layouts allow Google to find content more quickly and more efficiently than websites that are not mobile specific. From a usability stand point responsive websites are much more pleasant and easier to use than a non-mobile responsive website because the layout is specifically tailored to the dimensions of the screen.
